It is still little known that rugby is well-organised and flourishing in Trinidad, so the few "outsiders" who are aware of this fact return again and again to experience the
unique style of Trini rugby (which has already produced wingers for English clubs Bristol RFC and Wasps RFC in the 1990s). There are twelve local clubs who play against one another in a league during the rainy season - when the grounds are
softer - between July and December. Touring teams are welcomed at any time of the year though and fixtures are usually altered to accommodate our visitors, if necessary. A thriving Schools Development Programme, which began
in the early 1990s, now exists. It provides keen competition at Under 16 and Under 18 levels and schools are now being encouraged to combine rugby tours with educational trips to our Pitch Lake, Aripo Caves, Asa Wright Nature Centre and other
areas of geographical interest on off days. A Caribbean Under 16s X-A-Side Tournament has been organised for late August this year at which teams from North and South America are expected to compete as well. The highlight of our
rugby calendar is the Carib beer - sponsored International Rugby 7s tournament which is always held over the first weekend in December and always attracts teams from far and wide, including South Africa, Australia and Japan in the past!
Of course, rugby players will be rugby players and the aftermath is usually more memorable than the game itself.

Testimonial from Birkenhead Park F.C.
MR. PETER GREVILLE, HON. SECRETARY "Dear Brian, I am writing to express our gratitude for making our recent stay in Trinidad so memorable and enjoyable. We knew that we were in for a good time as soon as you greeted us with
crates of beer on our arrival at Piarco Airport! The trip to play Rainbow RFC in south Trinidad was an unforgettable rugby experience and ...... the day out you arranged at the superb Maracas Bay was
a fitting finale to our stay when once again we enjoyed good company and were well fed and watered. We would certainly recommend Trinidad as one of the best rugby touring destinations and my only regret is that our stay was not longer.
Yours sincerely, Peter Greville".
